How do I update my FRITZ!Box and reset it to factory settings?

Updating FRITZ!OS keeps your FRITZ!Box secure and adds new features. If your FRITZ!Box no longer works properly or you want to pass it on, you can reset it to factory settings. Here is how to do both.

Short answer: start the update in the user interface under 'System' → 'Update'. You can reset the FRITZ!Box under 'System' → 'Backup', where you can also back up your settings first. If you can no longer access the user interface, depending on the model you can use the reset button, the phone code #991*15901590*, the app or the 'Forgot your password?' function.

Updating FRITZ!OS online

1Open the user interface

Connect your device to the FRITZ!Box via LAN cable or WLAN and enter http://fritz.box or 192.168.178.1 in your browser.

2Log in

Log in with the FRITZ!Box password. You will find it on the label on the bottom of the FRITZ!Box (FRITZ!Box password). Note: this is not the WLAN network key.

3Open the 'Update' menu

Click on 'System' and then on 'Update'. Select the 'FRITZ!OS Version' tab. Here you can see which FRITZ!OS version is installed and when the last automatic search for updates took place.

4Search for and start the update

Click on 'Search for New FRITZ!OS'. If a new version is found, start the update. The FRITZ!Box then restarts. Do not unplug it during the update.

ℹ Automatic updates

In the 'Auto-Update' tab you can set whether the FRITZ!Box installs new FRITZ!OS versions automatically. Updates for connected FRITZ! devices, e.g. repeaters, can be found under 'Home Network' → 'Mesh'.

Before you reset: back up your settings

A reset deletes your personal settings. Your Teleboy internet settings are kept. FRITZ! therefore recommends creating a backup first. This lets you restore your settings after the reset.

1Open the 'Backup' menu

Log in to the user interface, then click on 'System' and on 'Backup'.

2Save the backup

Set a password for the backup and save the configuration file (file extension .export) in a safe place, e.g. on your computer. Make a note of the password, as you will need it to restore the settings.

3Restore your settings

After the reset, open 'System' → 'Backup' again, select the saved file and enter the password. On some models you can choose which settings to restore, e.g. only WLAN or telephony.

Resetting to factory settings (with access to the user interface)

⚠ Before you reset

Your Teleboy internet settings are preconfigured on the FRITZ!Box and are kept. After the reset, the FRITZ!Box reconnects to the internet by itself. This can take a few minutes. Your personal settings (e.g. WLAN name and password) are deleted, however. So create a backup first. Afterwards, you log in again with the password printed on the label on the bottom. If you still have no internet after a few minutes, follow our guide Setting Up the FRITZ!Box (DSL & Fiber Optic) or contact us.

1Open the user interface

Go to http://fritz.box or 192.168.178.1 and log in with the FRITZ!Box password.

2Open the 'Backup' menu

Click on 'System' and then on 'Backup'.

3Load the factory settings

Click on 'Load Factory Settings' and confirm the reset. On newer models (FRITZ!OS 7.5 and later) you may need to confirm again directly on the device, e.g. by pressing a button, or by phone. Follow the instructions on screen and keep your password at hand.

4Wait a moment

All LEDs flash once. As soon as the WLAN LED stays lit, the FRITZ!Box has been reset.

These steps use the FRITZ!Box 5530 as an example. Depending on the model, the FRITZ!OS version and the interface language, the menus may differ slightly.

Resetting without access to the user interface

If you can no longer log in, for example because you changed the password and then forgot it, there are several options. Which methods are available depends on the model. Check the manual of your device to see which ones your FRITZ!Box supports.

ℹ Check first

If your browser only shows a blank or white page, clear the browser cache and try again. For advanced users: with a LAN cable, the FRITZ!Box can also be reached at the emergency IP address 169.254.1.1 if you give your computer the static IP address 169.254.1.2 with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, but you still need the FRITZ!Box password to log in there.

Option A: with the reset button

1Press the reset button

If your FRITZ!Box has a small recessed reset button on the back, press it with a pointed object for about 5 seconds. Newer models often no longer have this button.

Option B: with a connected phone

1Disconnect the power and connect a phone

Unplug the FRITZ!Box from the power supply and connect a phone with tone dialling. This only works with models that have a telephony function. IP phones and the FRITZ!App Fon cannot be used for this.

2Reconnect the power

Plug the FRITZ!Box back in and wait until the Power LED stays lit.

3Enter the code

Pick up the handset, wait for the dial tone and dial #991*15901590*. With a cordless phone, you can also enter the code first and then press the call key.

4Hang up and wait

You will hear a signal tone. Hang up after about 3 seconds. All LEDs flash once. After about two minutes, the FRITZ!Box has been reset. You can tell by the WLAN LED staying lit.

With a cordless phone that is not registered with the FRITZ!Box, you may first need to allow characters such as * and # to be sent in the phone settings.

Option C: with the AVM app

1Reset in the app

If you set up your FRITZ!Box with an app (possible from FRITZ!Box 7590 AX and 7530 AX onwards), you can also reset it in the AVM app you used. Follow the instructions in the app.

Option D: via 'Forgot your password?'

1Briefly disconnect the power

Unplug the FRITZ!Box and plug it back in after 1 minute.

2Open the interface within 10 minutes

Within the next 10 minutes, go to http://fritz.box and click on 'Forgot your password?'.

3Restore factory settings

Click on 'Restore Factory Settings'. Then log in with the password printed on the label on the bottom.

If you are offered 'Send push service mail' under 'Forgot your password?', you can use it to reset only the password. Your other settings are then kept.

If the FRITZ!Box does not establish an internet connection after the reset and the info LED is red, follow our guide Setting Up the FRITZ!Box (DSL & Fiber Optic) or contact us.
