Why was the new replay advertising introduced?
30 to 40 percent of all TV content in Switzerland is watched time-shifted – and the trend is rising. Since viewers can fast-forward through traditional ad breaks, TV channels are losing an increasingly important source of revenue. The industry has responded with new, short ad formats that are shown specifically during replay playback.
What is GT12?
The legal basis is the industry agreement GT12 (Joint Tariff 12), negotiated between distribution associations (Suissedigital, Swissstream) and rights management organisations – including ProLitteris, SSA, SUISA, SUISSIMAGE and SWISSPERFORM. It governs the conditions under which replay TV may be offered. Since 30 March 2026, the SRG channels (SRF, RTS, RSI) are also part of this agreement.
Good to know
ARD, ZDF and ORF do not show replay advertising.
The three ad formats
| Format | When does it appear? |
|---|---|
| Start-Ad | Briefly before the start of a time-shifted programme (two spots) |
| Fast-Forward-Ad | When fast-forwarding through an ad break |
| Pause-Ad | Static banner displayed when pressing the pause button |
Who is affected by replay advertising?
Replay advertising applies to all paid TV subscriptions – regardless of the provider. Teleboy Free does not include Replay and therefore has no replay advertising either.
